British Colonization of Australia

aborigine-5

The reason why the British colonised Australia was because of the fact that the British needed a place for their convicts to stay. So the convicts, soldiers and doctors set sail looking for a place to settle. That’s when they found Australia.

When the Aborigines first saw the British settlers they thought they were possums and thought the ships were over sized canoes with giant weird animal skins on the top of it.

When the British landed the Aborigines couldn’t tell which of them were men and which of them where women, because of the fact that they had cloths, all of this was very different for the Aborigines. It was very hard for the aborigines due to the way they were treated. Some of them were used as slaves, servants and a lot of them killed and kept in prison.

The British settlers destroyed the Aborigines land separating children and adults from there family. They brought a sickness to Australia called the smallpox, which killed a lot of the Aborigines quite quickly. When having the small pox you would notice a lot of white dots on your face. You would feel very cold at one stage and then feel very hot. The small pox was very contagious, so when an Aborigine had the small pox the rest of the clan would have to leave the sick behind letting them die. That’s why it was a terrible experience for the Aborigines to go through when the British colonized Australia.

  1. It was bad that the British people bring in the smallpox, and which killed a lot of people quite quickly. And it was bad that the aborigines died for the smallpox and they had to them behind sick letting them to die. Great work

  2. I couldn’t agree with you more about your blog. It truly was a difficult time for the indigenous not only the British invaded there land and brought over a disease and killed hundreds of aboriginals they in slaved them, killed them and made them prisoners.

  3. It was really painful to watch your family, clan and friends slowly and painfully die in front of your eyes. This was really unfair because the Indigenous Australians had lived for so many centuries of peace, until the First Fleet came and destroyed it all.

  4. I loved the way you looked at both sides of the story. At the start you explained how the British were looking for land for a penal colony and found Australia and then you explained how the Aboriginals felt about the colonisation of the British settlers in Australia and the effects it had on the Aboriginals.

  5. I agree with your opinion on the settlers bringing in new diseases into Australia. They brought in the smallpox, which Australia had no immunity to because it had never encountered that disease before. The smallpox wiped out most of the Aboriginals in the first wave! When the Europeans first arrived they had already killed many.

  6. I agree with your post and I like the way you explained at start how the British were looking for a land for a penal colony. I also like the way you explained the point of view of how the Aboriginals felt about the colonisation. It was truly a violent incident and should have never occurred the way it did.

  7. I agree it that the British were looking for a land to make it a penal colony. It was well explained and it was a violent time for the Aboriginals and it was also a good point to explain the point of view from the Aboriginals perspective.

  8. Like you said, the aboriginals were confused by the British. When I first heard this, I laughed a little. Because they had never seen people like the British, it was very confusing for them. The idea of giant canoes/ boats was a very good idea that the British could have learned from.

  9. I liked the way you showed the perspective of the indigenous and the British of the colonisation of Australia. It was devastating how one disease killed so many people because the indigenous weren’t immune and had knowledge of the disease which left them helpless. The pictures match the post very well and really helped your argument. Well done.

  10. I agree, the Aboriginals were treated like animals, even if they survived the smallpox, what the English did was severely wrong on all terms, only because their skin was ‘black’, it truly was disgusting.
